What is a dental emergency?

Swelling, bleeding, pain, and pus from your teeth or gums are all indicators of a dental emergency. Additionally, cracked, loose, broken, or knocked-out teeth are signs that immediate attention is needed. If you experience any of these symptoms, call My E20 Dentist immediately on 020 3930 0922 for an emergency appointment.

Accidents or injuries affecting your mouth can be distressing. Even minor chips in teeth need to be looked at and fixed quickly. If you've knocked out one or more teeth, it's crucial to see a dental professional quickly, as there may be an opportunity to reimplant them. Our specialist oral surgeons are here to help.

Caring for your dental emergency while you wait

With same-day and out-of-hours appointments available with our team of local dentists, you shouldn’t have to wait too long to get help with your dental emergency.

In the meantime, you can try relieving any discomfort or swelling by taking an anti-inflammatory medication like Ibuprofen, following the recommended dosage guidelines. Steer clear of aspirin, as it contains blood-thinning properties that can worsen the situation.

If you've experienced a cracked or broken tooth, gather all the pieces and carefully wrap them in a clean, damp cloth. If a tooth has fallen out, carefully rinse it in lukewarm, salt water, ensuring not to handle it by the root.

Frequently asked questions

about dental emergencies at My E20 Dentist
What happens at an emergency dental appointment?

Your dentist will start by listening to what's going on and examining the affected area - the specific tooth or area causing you pain. An emergency consultation is focused on this problem only; it does not include a full mouth check-up, and any treatment needed is charged separately. If an X-ray would help us see what's happening beneath the surface, we'll take one (charged separately at £15). From there, we'll focus on getting you out of pain and stabilising the issue, which may involve a temporary filling, a course of antibiotics, pain relief, or in some cases starting treatment such as a root canal or extraction. We'll always explain what's happening, what your options are, and what each step will cost before we do anything.

How long does an emergency appointment take?

Most emergency appointments last between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on what treatment is needed. Some issues can be resolved fully in one visit, others are stabilised first and followed up with a longer appointment to complete the treatment.

Why is it important to be seen quickly in a dental emergency?

Dental problems rarely resolve on their own and often worsen over time. Acting quickly can be the difference between saving a tooth and losing it, particularly with knocked-out or broken teeth where every hour matters. Untreated infections can also spread into the surrounding bone or even further, which is why we always advise getting seen as soon as possible.

What treatments might I need at an emergency appointment?

The most common emergency treatments include temporary fillings, pain relief, antibiotics for infection, repairs to chipped or broken teeth, re-cementing crowns or bridges that have come loose, root canal treatment for severe infection or nerve pain, and in some cases extraction when a tooth cannot be saved. Your dentist will talk you through the options before any treatment begins.

How much does an emergency dental appointment cost?

An emergency consultation at My E20 Dentist is £100. This covers the assessment of the specific problem you've come in with, plus advice on how to resolve it - it does not include a full mouth check-up or any treatment. X-rays, if needed, are charged separately at £15 each. Any treatment carried out during or after your appointment is quoted on top, and you'll be given a clear price before anything is started.

What are the risks of leaving a dental emergency untreated?

The most common risks of delaying care are infection spreading from a tooth into the surrounding bone or jaw, losing a tooth that could have been saved, and minor cracks turning into full breaks that need more complex treatment. Acting early almost always means simpler, less expensive treatment and a better long term outcome.

Can I be seen out of hours?

Yes. Because our dentists live locally, we're often able to see emergency patients outside of standard opening hours, including evenings and weekends. Call us on 020 4572 0108 and we'll do everything we can to fit you in.
