What are fixed braces?
Fixed braces are orthodontic appliances consisting of brackets bonded to the teeth and connected by wires, exerting constant pressure to straighten teeth over time. At My E20 Dentist in London, our specialist orthodontist offers a variety of fixed brace options tailored to your needs and preferences. Choose from traditional metal braces for durability, ceramic braces for a discreet appearance, or clear braces for the ultimate aesthetic appeal. Whatever your choice, we will guide you through the process to achieve your dream smile.

How do fixed braces work?
Fixed braces work by applying gentle, constant pressure to your teeth, gradually guiding them into a straighter position over time. The brackets bonded to each tooth act as anchors, and the wire connecting them is shaped to encourage the teeth to move in a specific direction.
At regular appointments, your specialist orthodontist will adjust the wire to keep the movement on track. Each small adjustment builds on the last, which is why fixed braces are so effective at handling more complex cases that other methods can't always correct.Treatment time varies depending on what needs to be corrected, but most patients wear fixed braces for between 12 and 24 months. Once your teeth are in their new position, you'll be given retainers to keep them there long term.
The difference between ceramic and metal braces
Metal and ceramic braces are quite similar except for the material of the brackets. While metal braces are sturdy and resist staining, they are visible on the teeth's surface. Ceramic braces, on the other hand, have tooth-coloured brackets with a smoother finish, blending in with your teeth. However, you need to be cautious about food choices to prevent staining. Ceramic braces offer a balance between visible metal braces and newer, discreet options, making them a popular choice for many patients.

Frequently asked questions
Fixed braces can effectively treat a wide range of orthodontic issues, but suitability depends on individual patient needs. Your specialist orthodontist at My E20 will assess whether they are the right option for you, during your initial consultation at our London practice.
Initially, there may be some discomfort or pressure as your teeth adjust to the braces. However, this discomfort typically subsides within a few days, and most patients adapt quickly.
The duration of treatment varies depending on the severity of the dental issues being corrected. On average, treatment with fixed braces can last anywhere from 12 months to two years. Your specialist orthodontist will give you a clear timeline for the extent of your teeth straightening treatment, as part of your personalised plan.
Proper oral hygiene is crucial while wearing fixed braces. Brushing and flossing after meals, using interdental brushes, and seeing your dentist at My E20 for regular dental check-ups are essential to maintain oral health throughout treatment.
While you can eat most foods with fixed braces, it's recommended to avoid hard, sticky, or overly crunchy foods that may damage the braces or get stuck in them.
Fixed braces are suitable for patients of all ages, from children to adults. The decision to use fixed braces depends on factors such as dental health, orthodontic needs, and personal preferences, which your orthodontist will assess during your consultation at our London practice.
We offer 0% APR payment plans for treatments over £1000. You can spread the cost over up to 12 months, making it easier to manage your dental care expenses. Speak to one of our team members for further information.
Your first consultation is a relaxed conversation with Dr Negulescu about what you'd like to change. She'll examine your teeth and bite, take a few photos or a digital scan, and talk you through your options. If fixed braces are the right route, she'll explain how long treatment is likely to take, what's involved, and what it will cost. You'll have time to ask questions and there's no pressure to commit on the day.
After your initial consultation, your braces are fitted at a longer appointment lasting around 60 to 90 minutes. From then on, you'll come in for short adjustment appointments every 4 to 8 weeks, where Dr Negulescu fine-tunes the wires to keep your teeth moving on track. Once your teeth are in the right position, the braces are removed (the debond appointment) and you're fitted with retainers to keep your new smile in place long-term.
Fixed braces use brackets that are bonded to your teeth, with a wire running between them. Clear braces work the same way but use tooth-coloured ceramic brackets that blend into your teeth, making them far less noticeable. Both are highly effective and can correct the same range of cases. Dr Negulescu will recommend the best option for your goals at your consultation.
The cost of fixed braces depends on the complexity of your case and the type of braces you choose. You'll receive a clear, written quote at your consultation, and 0% finance is available for treatment over £1,000 to help spread the cost.
Fixed braces are a very safe, well-established treatment, but there are a few things to be aware of. Brackets can occasionally come loose if you eat hard or sticky foods, requiring a short repair appointment. Plaque can build up around brackets if oral hygiene drops, leading to white marks on the teeth or early gum disease, which is why brushing and hygiene visits are so important during treatment. Some patients experience minor root shortening, which is monitored throughout treatment. Dr Negulescu will go through all of this with you in detail at your consultation.
Adjustment appointments are short, usually 15 to 30 minutes. Dr Negulescu will check how your teeth are moving, change or tighten the wire if needed, and make any small adjustments to keep treatment on track. There's a small amount of pressure for a day or two afterwards as your teeth respond, but most patients are back to normal quickly.
Yes. Retainers are essential after any orthodontic treatment because teeth naturally want to drift back towards their original position. You'll be fitted with retainers as part of your treatment plan, with full instructions on how often to wear them. Many patients have a fixed wire bonded behind the front teeth and a removable retainer worn at night for the best long-term result.
Yes, with a few small adjustments. For contact sports, a custom mouthguard is essential to protect both your teeth and your braces. For wind or brass instruments, there's usually a short adjustment period as you get used to playing with the braces in place, but most patients adapt within a few weeks.
